Herding Group
The herding group has some very old breeds within it but has only been defined as a group since 1983. These breeds were formed to herd livestock. There was different breeds formed depending on what part of the world they were used. Different coat types and sizes of dogs emerged to suit the needs of that particular part of the world. The breeds in this group tend to be very loyal to their family and protective of them. They are highly intelligent and enjoy working side by side with their human companion. Often they are good with children but they do like to herd things and the kids may be one of them often they will nip at a child's heels in an attempt to herd them. As with any type of dog it is very important to supervise kids and dogs at all times.
The following breeds are apart of the Herding group;
Belgian Sheepdog (3 varieties)
Berger des Pyrenees
Berger Picard
Briard
Canaan Dog
Puli
Welsh Corgi (Cardigan)
Eventually I would like to have a short description of each breed here but that is going to take awhile so for now I have linked to the national breed club for each if there is one available. If you are desperately searching for info on a certain breed, you can e-mail me and I will try and help you out.
