What is a "Back Yard Breeder"?

Unfortunately, in Canada there are no laws governing who is and isn’t allowed to breed. Even if you have never in your life had a dog you can go buy a dog today and start breeding tomorrow with no knowledge whatsoever of dogs or the science of breeding. Breeding is a very serious thing to undertake and really should only be done by those who are very knowledgeable and breed to improve their breeds lines.

Back yard breeders are simply pet owners who are very ignorant to the science of breeding and usually dogs in general. Their motivation for breeding can be a wide variety of reasons, they think that it would just be fun to have pups around, their fluffy is just so cute, maybe I can make a little money, or I want the kids to experience the miracle of birth, and the list goes on. There is only one reason to breed, because you have something to offer it and you want to make it better. Back yard breeders often think that any dog that is pure should be bred, that is simply not true. If a dog has registration papers, all it means is that the dog is pure, and even then papers can be falsified, papers are not a go ahead to breed. The Canadian Kennel Club does not have the manpower to police all breeders in this country so it is very much up to you, the puppy buyer, to know who you are buying from and exactly what you are getting for your money (should be more than just a pup). Buyers be ware!
